Orientational isomers of alpha-cyclodextrin [2]semi-rotaxanes with asymmetric dicationic threads

Two series of novel dicationic threading molecules [Quin(CH2)10R]2+ and [3,5-Lut(CH2)10R]2+, where Quin+ = quinuclidinium, 3,5-Lut+ = 3,5-lutidinium, and R+ = N(CH3)3+ and N(CH3)2CH2CH3+, form [2]semi-rotaxanes with [small alpha]-cyclodextrin (alpha-CD) in aqueous solution. The quinuclidinium and 3,5-lutidinium are sufficiently bulky to prevent threading while the R+ groups allow for slow threading by alpha-CD at 25 degrees C. The resulting [2]semi-rotaxanes exist in two orientational isomers owing to the asymmetry of both the alpha-CD cavity and the threading molecules. Two-dimensional 1H NMR spectroscopy and kinetics experiments reveal that the isomer in which the narrower rim (primary OHs) is positioned near the R+ group is the kinetically preferred isomer, while the other isomer is the thermodynamically preferred product. The kinetics and mechanism of the formation, dissociation, and interconversion of the two isomers have been determined at 25 degrees C.     

A Unified Fixed Point Theory for Countably P -Concentrative Multimaps

New fixed point results and Leray-Schauder alternatives are presented for countably P -concentrative multimaps. The notion of an essential map is also introduced for a wide class of maps.     

Enhancement of the Enzymatic Digestibility and Ethanol Production from Sugarcane Bagasse by Moderate Temperature-Dilute Ammonia Treatment

In this study, sugarcane bagasse was pretreated with ammonium hydroxide, and the effectiveness of the pretreatment on enzyme hydrolysis and ethanol production was examined. Bagasse was soaked in ammonium hydroxide and water at a ratio of 1:0.5:8 for 0–4 days at 70 °C. Approximately, 14–45 % lignin, 2–6 % cellulose, and 13–22 % hemicellulose were removed during a 0.5- to 4-day ammonia soaking period. The highest glucan conversion of sugarcane bagasse soaked in dilute ammonia at moderate temperature by cellulase was accomplished at 78 % with 75 % of the theoretical ethanol yield. Under the same conditions, untreated bagasse resulted in a cellulose digestibility of 29 and 27 % of the theoretical ethanol yield. The increased enzymatic digestibility and ethanol yields after dilute ammonia pretreatment was related to a combined effect of the removal of lignin and increase in the surface area of fibers.

Generation of substituted styrenes via Suzuki cross-coupling of aryl halides with 2,4,6-trivinylcyclotriboroxane

The synthesis of functionalized styrene derivatives can be readily achieved utilizing a Suzuki cross-coupling protocol between aryl halides and 2,4,6-trivinylcyclotriboroxane-pyridine complex. The scope and limitations of the procedure were demonstrated by investigation of an array of ortho-substituted aryl halides.
